Coatings Chemist

The Coatings Chemist will serve as a primary technical resource for coatings expertise within the Socomore Rhome facility. This role will focus on the understanding of coatings formulas, troubleshoot testing and validation, reformulation for raw material replacements, and process stabilization of coatings products, including moisture-sensitive pre-polymer systems. The Coatings Chemist will partner closely with the Coatings Industrialization Engineer, as well as with other technical experts in the group, and will contribute to the successful transfer, scale-up, and ongoing production of aerospace coatings and primers at the Rhome site.

Qualifications Minimum:
• Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or a related discipline and two semesters of general and organic Chemistry each.
• 5+ years of experience with some combination of the following coatings chemistries:
• Polyurethane (moisture-or-not-cured urethanes, single + double component systems)
• Epoxy primers
• Acid-etch primers
• Polyurethane-based prepolymers with amine curatives.
• Solvent and water-based polyurethanes

Preferred:
• Prior aerospace or military specification (mil-spec) product experience.
• Experience with lab-to-production scale transfer.
• Experience in a small series batch environment.

Responsibilities: Main tasks

• Conducts laboratory procedures and experiments to support project and production goals.
• Executes testing and stabilization of a moisture-sensitive pre-polymer product to ensure repeatable, reliable production processes.
• Supports phased industrialization of Aeroglaze / Chemglaze coatings by conducting raw material evaluations, trials, and product qualification testing.
• Focuses on extension and scale-up of existing formulations.
• Partner with suppliers to evaluate new or replacement raw materials for product performance and cost-effectiveness.
• Support toll manufacturers with technical needs as applicable.
• Recommend modifications to existing formulas to resolve production or supply challenges and adapt to changing specifications.
• Log formula and test results into the company ERP system, ensuring thorough, accurate, and compliant data entry.
• Prepares and analyzes reports on test results, providing recommendations to the Coatings Industrialization Engineer.
• Collaborates with internal teams (manufacturing, maintenance, quality, supply chain) and global colleagues.
• Reports periodically to his line manager about his activities.
• Utilizes design-of-experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis tools to inform formulation decisions and communicate findings.
• Prepare and deliver technical presentations or reports summarizing formulation development and test findings to internal or external stakeholders.
• Participate in Quality Board Reviews (QBR) to identify and resolve recurring coatings production inconsistencies.
• Ensures compliance with all established safety rules, regulations, and company Code of Conduct.
• Maintains laboratory and assigned areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Proposes potential new laboratory equipment acquisitions to increase efficiency.
• Supports continuous improvement efforts in coatings processes, testing, and efficiency.
• Travels up to 25% domestically and internationally to support training, scale-up trials, or technical collaboration.
